What's the difference between Palliative Care and Hospice?
Palliative Care is used to keep patients comfortable by managing their symptoms. Hospice includes Palliative Care as the foundation for patient treatment plans. However, Palliative Care also is used to provide symptom relief for patients who may not be eligible for or choose not to accept hospice care.
What's the difference between Home Care and Home Services Private Duty?
Home Care provides medical assistance in the home; Home Services Private Duty provides everything else – from help with household chores to errands.
Can you help me at home if I don't need a nurse?
Yes. Home Services Private Duty can help with your personal, non-medical needs.
Is Hospice House and Munson Hospice the same thing?
Munson Hospice delivers hospice care and family support to people in their own homes. Hospice House is a lovely eight-bedroom home located near Munson Medical Center where hospice patients may choose to reside to receive hospice care, especially if they have no one to care for them in their own home.
Will Medicare pay for a nurse to take care of my mother while I'm at work?
No. Medicare will pay for skilled nurses, therapists, aides, and social workers under a physician’s direction to provide short-term care for patients confined to home because of illness, injury, or surgery. Home Services Private Duty may be a better fit.
I'm dealing with a loss from a death, but we didn't use Munson Hospice. Is there some help or support out there?
Yes. Munson offers grief support and counseling services for anyone who needs those services. For more information, call 1-800-252-2065.
I thought all hospices were the same – is there a difference?
Yes – a big difference. Look for an agency with the ability to meet your needs with the highest quality. Most hospices are Medicare certified, which not only means they accept insurance coverage through Medicare's hospice benefit, but they also meet the strict requirements to do so. It is important to ask if the hospice agency is also accredited by any other agency that monitors for quality and safety, for instance the Community Health Accreditation Program (CHAP). Medicare-certified hospices are required to provide some basic services, but not all. Check to see the full scope of services that your hospice could provide for you. Use recommendations from people you know. You have choices.
